Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
